Gas Department

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the building and call City Hall at 229-723-3677 during business hours or the Fire Department at 229-723-5150 after hours. In a natural gas emergency, call 911.

The Gas Department maintains gas lines within the city limits. Staff will clean space heaters by air compressor and light pilot lights.

Connecting residential service

1. Fill out the Residential Application Package for Utility Services, available below or at Utility Billing in City Hall. Gas customers also read and sign the notice for gas customers.
2. Bring valid photo identification and proof of property ownership or a lease or rental agreement.
3. Return the application to Utility Billing, where a credit check is run and your deposit is determined.

Dig safely

Call 811 at least two working days before digging so the Utilities Protection Center can mark underground lines. It is the law. If you do not call and hit a line, you could be hurt or killed and held liable for damages.

• Survey the area you plan to dig and mark it in white paint.
• Call 811 at least two working days before excavating.
• Wait the required time for lines to be marked.
• Keep the marks visible and follow them.
• Hand-dig within 18 inches on each side of a marked line.

If your equipment contacts a gas line: leave the equipment where it is and do not turn off engines or generators, warn others and leave the area quickly, do not operate any pipeline valves, and leave the excavation open. Call 911, then the Fire Department at 229-723-5150.
